wiki:PlanetMathAlphaRelease

This page provides release notes and further development plans for a rewrite of PlanetMath's software using the popular content management system  Drupal as part of the Planetary project.

What you will find on  alpha.planetmath.org

We view the alpha release as a "proof of concept" showing that we can port PlanetMath's content into a contemporary web framework. We have not yet reimplemented all of the old features, but we've attempted to make sure that, whenever it makes sense, the old data is there. For now, we've focused on the encyclopedia (books, papers, and expositions will come later). Please be warned that this version is for demonstration purposes only, and we do not plan to carry any edits made here into future versions of the site.

Here are the features you can check out:

  • Old logins and passwords work
  • Articles are ported over
  • Forums are ported over
  • Math rendering is fast and clean*
  • Old permissions have been ported into coauthor groups
  • We have a cool new syntax-highlighting LaTeX editor, and LaTeX now works in forums
  • Requests and corrections have been ported
  • Article histories managed via a VCS

*: We now use  LaTeXML to generate  MathML for super-fast client-side rendering in  Firefox; MathML also works in other modern browsers via  MathJaX.

What we are delaying for the beta (hopefully done before the end of 2011!)

  • MSC search implemented using Virtuoso integration
  • Various metadata and workflow issues, including keeping track of user actions and associated score
  • Various semantic services (several of these are currently being demoed elsewhere)
  • A new client-side autolinking tool
  • Books, papers, polls.
  • Improved theming.

How you can get involved

We are eager to get feedback, and there are several ways to make sure we see it.
